Whatever the value of economic analysis in its application to real problems, it lends no support to much of what we might call the folklore of economists. It is not possible, for instance, to make use of economic analysis to vindicate, with any pretense to generality, liberal presumptions in favor of freer trade, more competition, smaller public debt, or faster economic growth. Indeed such presumptions cannot be satisfactorily vindicated even by reference to fairly restricted premises about what matters.
