We do not accept anything resembling statism, because all forms of statism invariably become acts of coercion. * 2 As an Anarchist I expect no quarter from the State, but I am prepared to give no quarter in return. [Section 1: Le Brankard, Lille, 20th May 2004, Page 5.] * 3 It’s not the first time that the furious slave-owners try to make short work of the slaves who realize the tasks that lie ahead of them. There’s no government in the world, be it fascist, democratic or Soviet, the hands of which wouldn’t be stained with blood of conscious anarchist proletarians but no amount of terror will ever stop the coming revolution, or weaken the workers’ will to fight. * 4 Everyone fights until we achieve the definitive disappearance of the state in all its authoritarian ramifications. * 5 I do not expect any help for a libertarian revolution from any government in the world. * 6 Anarchism:--The philosophy of a new social order based on liberty unrestricted by man-made law; the theory that all forms of government rest on violence, and are therefore wrong and harmful, as well as unnecessary. * 7 ...there is ample excuse for Marxians: since they believe in and propagate the State, they also believe in and propagate power. But how can the Anarchists, whose social philosophy repudiates the State, all political power, all governmental authority, in short every sort of power and authority over their fellow men, how can they take and exercise power? * 8 For Fascism, Monarchism, Republicanism, and everyone else who demands the State all hate us and all work against us and our ideal. * 9 ...everywhere there have been the phenomena of multiple governments. This is just as dangerous as anarchy... * 10 "We will manage our business ourselves without waiting for the orders of a government, we will trample underfoot those who try to force us to accept them as priests, property owners or rulers," the workers have begun to say. We must hope that the anarchist party will continue to combat government worship vigorously, and never allow itself to be dragged or enticed into a struggle for power. * 11 What constitutes the characteristic, the raison d'etre of anarchism is the conviction that the governments -- dictatorships, parliaments, etc. -- are always instruments of conservation, reaction, oppression; and freedom, justice, well-being for everyone must come from the fight against authority, from free enterprise and free agreement among individuals and groups. * 12 ...if there were not sufficient support among the people to prevent the reconstitution of government, its authoritarian institutions and its organs of repression, we should refuse to cooperate or recognize it, and rebel against its demands, claiming full autonomy for ourselves and for all dissident minorities. We should remain in a state of open rebellion if possible, and prepare the way to convert present defeat into a future success. ["The Anarchist Revolution," by Errico Malatesta.] * 13 ...anarchists wish to express of the destruction of every political institution based on authority, and of the constitution of a free and equal society, based upon harmony of interests, and the voluntary contribution of all to the satisfaction of social needs. ["Anarchy," by Errico Malatesta.] * 14 Today, as ever, let this be our slogan: Down with Capitalists and Governments, all Capitalists and Governments! Long live the peoples, all the peoples! ["Pro-Government Anarchists," by Errico Malatesta, from: Freedom, April 1916.] * 15 Here is our mission: demolishing, or contributing to demolish any political power whatsoever, with all the series of repressive forces that support it; preventing, or trying to prevent new governments and new repressive forces from arising; in any case, refraining from ever acknowledging any government, keeping always fighting against it, claiming and requiring, even by force if possible, the right to organize and live as we like, and experiment the forms of society that seem best to us, as long as they do not prejudice the others’ equal freedom, of course. ["Revolution in Practice," by Errico Malatesta, from Umanità Nova, n. 191, October 7, 1922. Section 2.] * 16 The dehumanizing nature of capitalism and the state system stimulated the desire to build a better world -- a world rooted in true equality, liberty, freedom and solidarity. The tyrannical propensities of the state -- any state -- underpinned by private capital, have propelled anarchists to insist on the complete abolition of the state system. * 17 There are complaints against demonstrations and anarchists and people with long hair, people with beards, and all that.... * 18 Without falling into utopian fantasies about the social and international organization of the future, we can already now foretell the abolition of the most important of the organs of chronic struggle inside society, namely, the state, as a political organization opposed to society and safeguarding mainly the interests of its ruling section. In exactly the same way we can already now foresee the international character of the impending economic revolution. * 19 ...what most distinguishes anarchism from other political ideologies is the idea that the state rules for itself whenever it can, not for individuals, interest groups, socioeconomic classes, or society as a whole. * 20 Anarchism does not only advocate that imperial power does not reach the self, it also seeks to make sure that it does not reach anyone else. * 21 I am the deadly enemy of the state, which always hovers between the alternatives, it or I. Therefore it strictly insists not only on not letting me have a standing, but also on keeping down what is mine. In the state there is no property, no property of the individual, but only state property. Only through the state have I what I have, as I am only through it what I am. * 22 A very few—as heroes, patriots, martyrs, reformers in the great sense, and men—serve the state with their consciences also, and so necessarily resist it for the most part; and they are commonly treated as enemies by it. A wise man will only be useful as a man, and will not submit to be "clay," and "stop a hole to keep the wind away..." * 23 I simply wish to refuse allegiance to the State, to withdraw and stand aloof from it effectually. I do not care to trace the course of my dollar, if I could, till it buys a man or a musket to shoot one with—the dollar is innocent—but I am concerned to trace the effects of my allegiance. In fact, I quietly declare war with the State, after my fashion, though I will still make use and get what advantages of her I can, as is usual in such cases. * 24 The abolition of Governments will merely rid us of all unnecessary organization which we have inherited from the past, an organization for the commission of violence and for its justification. * 25 The democratization of both power and resources would spell an end to capitalism and class society, with its pyramid of owners, bosses, and workers. So too would it mean an end to the state, with its legislators, bureaucrats, and police.
