We all know that our program is just. It expresses in a few noble words the just and humane demands of the proletariat. Just because it is an absolutely humane program, it contains all the symptoms of the social revolution. It proclaims the destruction of the old and the creation of the new world.

The historic opposition of anarchists to oppression of all kinds, be it that of serfs, peasants, craftspeople, or workers, inevitably led them to oppose exploitation in the newly emerging factory system as well. Much earlier than we are often led to imagine, syndicalism -- essentially a rather inchoate but radical form of trade unionism -- became a vehicle by which many anarchists reached out to the industrial working class...

Revolutionary anarchism is not something apart from the working-class struggle. In defining a labor movement, we seen no liberty where there is exploitation and no socialism where liberty is lacking. We are for equality without bureaucracy and for a victory of the masses without any ruling faction, old or new.

...the Revolution in Spain is absolutely and completely a proletarian Revolution without leadership of any sort. Hence its purity.
• 5
Some day the workers must wake up to see that Anarchism alone represents the only safeguard for freedom and well-being. I rather think it is worth the price.
• 6
Free communism, anarchist communism, was only beginning to dawn upon the minds of the workers and scarcely ventured to provoke the attacks of the worshipers of government.

...for us and all anarchists, the abolition of political power is not possible without the simultaneous destruction of economic privilege.

And tomorrow, in the revolution, we must play an active part in the necessary physical struggle, seeking to make it as radical as possible, in order to destroy all the repressive forces of the government and to induce the people to take possession of the land, homes, transport, factories, mines, and of all existing goods, and organize themselves so that there is a just distribution immediately of food products. At the same time we must arrange for the exchange of goods between communities and regions and continue to intensify production and all those services which are of use to the people.

What matters to me is not 'class unity' but the triumph of anarchy, which concerns everybody; and in the labor movement I see only a means of raising the morale of the workers, accustom them to free initiative and solidarity in a struggle for the good of everyone and render them capable of imagining, desiring and putting into practice an anarchist life.
["The Labor Movement and Anarchism," by Errico Malatesto, December 1925. Open letter addressed to the editors of El Productor, an anarchist journal published in Barcelona.]

The anarchists within the unions should strive to ensure that they remain open to all workers of whatever opinion or party on the sole condition that there is solidarity in the struggle against the bosses. They should oppose the corporatist spirit and any attempt to monopolize labor or organization. They should prevent the Unions from becoming the tools of the politicians for electoral or other authoritarian ends; they should preach and practice direct action, decentralization, autonomy and free initiative. They should strive to help members learn how to participate directly in the life of the organization and to do without leaders and permanent officials. They must, in short, remain anarchists, remain always in close touch with anarchists and remember that the workers' organization is not the end but just one of the means, however important, of preparing the way for the achievement of anarchism.
["Syndicalism and Anarchism," by Errico Malatesta, April-May 1925.]

Anarchism derives not so much from abstract reflections of intellectuals or philosophers as from the objective conditions in which workers and producers find themselves.

...the Anarchist flag had been hauled down and only the Catalan flag was flying. That meant that the workers were definitely beaten...

Anarchist Communism says that private property, since it involves the exploitation of the many for the benefit of the few, is also a restriction on liberty and must be abolished along with the State.

How many thousands of Socialists, and above all Anarchists, have lost work and even the chance of work, solely on the ground of their opinions. It is only the specially gifted craftsman, who, if he be a zealous propagandist, can hope to retain permanent employment. And what happens to a man with his brain working actively with a ferment of new ideas, with a vision before his eyes of a new hope dawning for toiling and agonizing men, with the knowledge that his suffering and that of his fellows in misery is not caused by the cruelty of fate, but by the injustice of other human beings,--what happens to such a man when he sees those dear to him starving, when he himself is starved?

In spite of the law declaring the International Association of Workers illegal, several conferences were held throughout Spain. The movement became so strong and general that the Republicans attempted to capture it by swinging it into a political groove, but failed. The Spaniard has little faith in government, no matter what its brand, so they kept to one straight issue -- Revolution through economic action.

...anarchists should not be on the margin of the workers' movement. On the contrary, they should be its vanguard. That is the only way to stop the servants of the bourgeoisie from taking over the workers' organizations.
