Patriotism is an unreasoning and stupid hatred of everything that isn't part of the fatherland.

• 2

I am mortified with disgust at the stupidity of my countrymen... Their wild enthusiasm prompted by no intelligent motive, makes me long to die, that I may be spared the sight of it... Oh, why cannot I live among the Bedouin?

China is paralyzed; where can we find happiness? Some conscious youth believe that the only way to improve China's current situation is to promote "nationalism," and identify "nationalism" as the only road to happiness for the Chinese. Voices of "nationalism" have spread all over the nation. I shudder at such a thought. "Nationalism" is in fact the obstacle to human progress. Being a member of this society, I cannot accept nationalism against my conscience.

This is politics, which I as a soldier must not be concerned with. If I were to determine our policies, they would be simply -- I hate England!

We have always preached that the workers of all countries are brothers, and that the enemy—the “foreigner”—is the exploiter, whether born near us or in a far-off country, whether speaking the same language or any other. We have always chosen our friends, our companions-in-arms, as well as our enemies, because of the ideas they profess and of the position they occupy in the social struggle, and never for reasons of race or nationality. ...the disease loosely called nationalism is now almost universal. Antisemitism is only one manifestation of nationalism, and not everyone will have the disease in that particular form. A Jew, for example, would not be antisemitic: but then many Zionist Jews seem to me to be merely antisemites turned upside-down...

"Merrie Africa," like Merrie England, was always a myth.

They must not want to turn back into their nationality, into the womb, in order to be born again, but let every one turn in to himself. How ridiculously sentimental when one German grasps another's hand and presses it with sacred awe because "he too is a German!"

And the idea of the nation is one of the most powerful anesthetics that man has ever invented. Under the influence of its fumes the whole people can carry out its systematic program of the most virulent self-seeking without being the least aware of its moral perversion -- in fact, feeling dangerously resentful when it is pointed out.

I would remind my countrymen, that they are to be men first, and Americans only at a late and convenient hour.

Patriotism, as a feeling of exclusive love for one's own people, and as a doctrine of tile virtue of sacrificing one's tranquility, one's property, and ever, one's life, in defense of one's own people from slaughter and outrage by their enemies, was the highest idea of the period when each nation considered it feasible and just, for its own advantage, to subject to slaughter and outrage the people of other nations.
