The converse of slavery is freedom. Free individuals cannot be bought or sold, inherited or mistreated by another person; they can choose their occupation, own and dispose of property at will, marry whomsoever they wish, and raise children as they see fit. Freedom means autonomy. But where is the totally autonomous individual in any society?
