...superstition dismounts all these [sense, philosophy, natural piety], and erecteth an absolute monarchy, in the minds of men.

What we seek is the abolition of the artificial, privileged, lawful, and official influence. If the Church and State were private institutions, we should be, even then, I suppose their opponents. We should not have protested against their right to exist. True, in a sense, they are, today, private institutions, as they exit exclusively to conserve the interests of the privileged classes. Still, we oppose them, because they use all the power of the masses to force their rule upon the latter in an authoritarian, official, and brutal manner.

Does Heaven speak? The four seasons pursue their courses, and all things are continually being produced, but does Heaven say anything?

Any institution disposing of the immense power and wealth enjoyed over the centuries by the Church could not but tempt ambitious men into political intrigue, corruption and militancy.

And when men have been so befooled that they believe that God hangs in the corner, or sits in a morsel of pap which the priest gives out in a spoon; that to kiss a board or some relic and put candles in front of them, is useful for life here and hereafter-they are next called on to enter the military service, where they are humbugged to any extent; being first made to swear on the Gospel (in which swearing is prohibited) that they will do just what is forbidden in those Gospels, and then taught that to kill people at the word of those in command is not a sin, but that to refuse to obey those in command is a sin.

Do not go about worshiping deities and religious institutions as the source of the subtle truth. To do so is to place intermediaries between yourself and the divine, and to make of yourself a beggar who looks outside for a treasure that is hidden inside his own breast.

It was explained to me that an aged priest, who has been appointed Pope by other priests, cannot find either the time or the will to relieve your misery. He can only think of living.
