It is hard to believe that this simple truth is not understood by those leaders who forbid their followers to use effective contraceptive methods. They express a preference for 'natural' methods of population limitation, and a natural method is exactly what they are going to get. It is called starvation. * 2 Birth Control does not mean no children. It means bringing into the world only such children as are wanted by healthy parents. * 3 The way is open today for justice in this field. For all parents acknowledge which is their right and due, so that they may bring into the world only wanted children, with the heritage of sound bodies and sound minds. * 4 ...indeed my vision of a future when motherhood will be really free would seem on its way to fulfillment. For the time will come when the bearing of children, no longer an enforced burden, no longer haphazard and accidental, need only be undertaken as a cherished privilege; and every child will be a wanted child, born to its rightful heritage of love and care and comfort. Then truly will motherhood be the flower of womanhood. * 5 It seems inartistic and sordid to insert a pessary or a suppository in anticipation of the sexual act. But it is far more sordid to find yourself several years later burdened down with half a dozen unwanted children, helpless, starved, shoddily clothed, dragging at your skirt, yourself a dragged out shadow of the woman you once were. * 6 Birth Control is the keynote of a new moral philosophy. It is the philosophy of acceptance of the full responsibility of our acts. It gives to men and women the full control over their procreative and sex lives and gives them the power to create or not to create as desired. * 7 Is it moral for two adult people to bring children into the world knowing that there is no possible provision made for their survival? Is it moral to leave the welfare and health of your offspring to the charity of a few kindly and well-intentioned philanthropists or is it not the duty of two people to be responsible for the consequences of their acts, securing to the best of their ability all advantages for their children's development? * 8 ...children are loved and cared for in Holland as perhaps in no other country in Europe because those who are born are desired and the knowledge of how to prevent births is given to all married women, or women old enough to be married, in clinics conducted by nurses and doctors. * 9 Science has taught us how to take parenthood out of the sphere of accident, how to plan for the number of children in a family, and the intervals between their births. The idea that this should be done in accordance with the health of the mother and the income of the family seems obvious. * 10 When we insist that conception be surrounded by its normal atmosphere of triumphant love and happiness, and thus infuse into the new life the spark of love, with its impulse to live, to love in its turn, to be strong, we shall have a new sort of humanity. There will be no more "dumb, driven cattle" in the guise of men. When we can visualize out of the surging love and happiness of the creative act the strong, healthy, happy, mentally and spiritually vigorous child, we shall produce individuals with intellectual and spiritual gifts beyond those of any race that has yet appeared upon earth. * 11 Far back upon the road of today millions of women are trudging along overburdened with too many children, bowed, bent, broken, they stumble along. They call to you to listen to their piteous cry! What will your answer be? * 12 Are not our feeble minded institutions and insane asylums monuments to careless and reckless breeding? Is it not time that our physicians, scientists, social workers and sages, is it not time that they face this array of facts and stop quibbling in hairsplitting debates over woman's morality. I say this because you all know that the principal objection in the minds of these people against the idea of birth control for the working woman, is that it may have a tendency to decrease her standards of morality. Solicitude for woman's morals has always been the cloak that authority has worn in its age-long conspiracy to keep her in bondage!! * 13 ...women with several children who are fighting against the cold, hard fact that it is next to impossible for a mother to support more than two children unaided. The day's outing gives her fresh courage to face that fight against the dreaded institution for little Ted and eight-year old Mamie. Boys are passed who help the mother in the fight. Sickly children, too young to know that it is all about, are taken, too, by courtesy, not because they get any fun perhaps, but because their lives need saving.
