...in section 18 [of the Government White Paper] they recognize the possibility that "production of unessential goods may interfere with the production of essentials" and the consequent need to establish broad priorities for the guidance of production. This is justly and cogently said, but why is it limited to the transition period? Should not essentials always have priority over unessentials?

When you think about it, it is almost unbelievable that grown men would say that some men have to go jobless or with fewer working hours as the necessary and inevitable cost of bringing down prices. I am reminded of my old fundamentalist grandmother's suspicion that God would have given us wings if he had intended for us to soar the heavens.

Communism guarantees economic freedom better than any other form of association, because it can guarantee wellbeing, even luxury, in return for a few hours of work instead of a day's work.

Our needs are identical with labor's needs -- decent wages, fair working conditions, livable housing, old age security, health and welfare measures, conditions in which families can grow, have education for their children and respect in the community...

Usually what gamblers regret the most isn't the loss of their money so much as the loss of their insane hopes. But ultimately I feel less sorry for them than for the thousands of unfortunate people who would have benefited from a fair distribution of this wealth...
